Man dies after single-vehicle accident on I-295 in Northeast Washington

A 28-year-old Maryland man died in a single-vehicle accident Monday night that snarled traffic on the Anacostia Freeway into Tuesday morning’s commute, according to D.C. police.

The accident occurred about 11:45 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-295 near East Capitol Street NE. Officer Araz Alali, a police spokesman, said the driver of a Chevrolet Camaro apparently lost control of his vehicle. The vehicle went into the woods, hitting several trees and shrubs, and overturned, police said.

Police identified the driver as Anthony Lawrence Emerson, of Glenn Dale.

Alali said the lone occupant died shortly after midnight at an area hospital. D.C. police reopened the highway about 7:45 a.m. A cause of the crash remains under investigation, but police said the Camaro was speeding.
