Man fatally shot in Southeast D.C. hours after another killing in area
By Martin Weil and Ann Marimow,
A 23-year-old man was found fatally shot in Southeast Washington early Sunday, only a few hours after a fatal shooting in Southeast on Saturday night.
The homicides occurred about two miles apart, in neighborhoods just south of East Capitol Street. There was no immediate indication of any connection.
The more recent of the two apparently happened only a few minutes after midnight. The police said they were called to the scene, in the 3400 block of Croffut Place SE, at 12:08 a.m.
Officer Paul Metcalf, a police spokesman, said they found Angelo Alphonso Payne, 23, of Southeast. Metcalf said he was taken to a hospital where he died.
The earlier homicide occurred about 7:45 p.m. Saturday in the 5000 block of Ayers Place SE, police said.
They said a man who had apparently been shot was found in a car. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
They identified him as Darnell Rivers, 22, of Southeast. Two people were wounded in that shooting.
Police said a reward of up to $25,000 is available for information leading to an arrest and conviction in each of the homicides.
