Man shoots himself in leg at DC’s homeland security campus in apparent accident

A man shot himself in the leg in an apparent accident Thursday afternoon in the parking garage of the homeland security campus in Southeast Washington, according to police.

The incident occurred about 4:55 p.m. in the 2700 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., across from St. Elizabeths Hospital.

Authorities said the shooting occurred on part of the campus that is used by federal agencies. Police would not immediately say whether the man is connected to a law enforcement agency.

The man’s condition was not known, but police said the wound does not appear to be life threatening. The man was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
