Man taken into custody after Falls Church standoff

May 14, 2014

Fairfax County police stormed a Falls Church home Wednesday night following a nearly 12-hour standoff with a man who faced eviction and set fire to the house, officials said.

County sheriff’s deputies attempted to evict a man from a house in the 3200 block of Kenney Drive about 10 a.m. when they noticed something suspicious and called county police, said Officer Bud Walker, a Fairfax County spokesman. Police negotiated with the man until the evening, when he started a fire inside, Walker said.

Police then deployed tear gas, entered the house and took the man into custody about 9:20 p.m., Walker said. No one was injured.

Firefighters then extinguished the fire, Walker said.

No charges were filed initially and police did not identify the man.
