McLean fire leaves six cats dead

A fire in a McLean home Thursday afternoon left an elderly woman in the hospital and six of her eight pets dead, officials said.

The small house fire occurred at about 12:30 p.m. on the 1900 block of Westmoreland Street, said Capt. William Moreland, a spokesman for the Fairfax County Fire Department. It was brought under control minutes after units from Fairfax and Arlington arrived on the scene, he said.

The elderly resident was transported to Washington Hospital Center with non-life-threatening injuries, Moreland said. Firefighters were able to revive one dog and one cat, who were transported to a local animal hospital for care.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
