Missing D.C. woman identified as victim in fatal accident in Prince George’s County

A 71-year-old woman who was reported missing from the District the day after Christmas was struck and killed by a car on the Suitland Parkway the next day, D.C. police said on Tuesday.

Laura Townsend, of Southeast Washington, has been identified as the victim of the Dec. 27 accident in Forestville, in Prince George’s County, according to Officer Araz Alali, a D.C. police spokesman. Townsend had disappeared from her home on Alabama Avenue the afternoon of Dec. 26.

Police said it appears she was hit as she tried to cross the busy highway near Forestville Road. The accident remains under investigation by the U.S. Park Police. Authorities said the driver remained on the scene, and no charges have been filed.

D.C. police had issued an urgent alert for help finding Townsend. It remains unclear how and why she left her home.
