Patient charged with stealing equipment from emergency room in Calvert

A patient came into Calvert Memorial Hospital complaining of pain last week — and walked out with $4,600 of stolen equipment in his backpack, police said.

The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office says that Andre Eugene Friend, 35, spent a little over two hours as a patient in the emergency room at the hospital in Prince Frederick on July 22. At one point, he was left alone in an examination room. A nurse came in and found him trying to disconnect a computer in the room.

He was evaluated by medical staff and discharged, and he left carrying a blue backpack. A short time later, police got two calls — one from the hospital, saying equipment had been stolen, and one from a Chevrolet dealership, where a man was reportedly trying to sell items in a blue backpack to customers who had come to look at cars.

A sheriff’s office employee said that Friend had taken a wireless printer, a cordless telephone, a handheld tool used to scan patients’ wristbands, and another piece of medical equipment.

Friend, a Dundalk resident, was charged with theft.
