Police responded to three sexual assault cases in the Manassas area over the weekend — two young girls allegedly assaulted by much older acquaintances and an adult woman who awoke to find a stranger in her bed.
The 40-year-old woman, who lives in an apartment, thought when she woke up about 4:40 a.m. Sunday that the man in her bed must be her husband. She realized that her husband was asleep on the couch and that she did not know the person.
The man fled before she could see him clearly enough in the dark room to describe him to police.
Prince William County police officer Jonathan Perok said police think the man entered the apartment through an unlocked door. Police were interviewing neighbors Monday to find a potential witness.
In the other two cases, police arrested two people.
Delbert Grey Fitzhugh, 74, was charged with sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl on Saturday. The child said he assaulted her while they were both at her house.
Fitzhugh, of Fredericksburg, was charged with aggravated sexual battery and was held without bond.
Jose Baudilio Montes, 42, was charged with raping a 16-year-old girl who lives on the same block where he lives in Manassas.
The teen told Prince William police that she slipped on the steps to her basement. She hit her head and lost consciousness. She said she awoke in her bed Sunday and found Montes assaulting her.
“At this point, [the three cases are considered] just coincidence,” Perok said. Asked whether the number of alleged attacks is unusual, he added: “I would say it’s different, but I don’t have an answer to that. They’re not related.”
