Prince George’s police investigating two separate fatal car crashes from Wednesday

Prince George’s County police have identified two men who died Wednesday night in separate, fatal car crashes.

Maurice Michael Barnes, 32, died after his car crossed into oncoming traffic and hit another car head-on.

The collision occurred about 8:50 p.m. Wednesday near the 8600 block of Contee Road, said Cpl. Maria McKinney, a county police spokeswoman.

Barnes’s car was traveling west on Contee Road in Laurel when it hit the other car, police said.

Barnes, of Laurel, was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. A woman driving the other vehicle was taken to a hospital in serious condition.

Later that night, about 11:00 p.m., police responded to a second collision at the intersection of 38th Avenue and Rhode Island Avenue in Brentwood, police said.

James Kevin Green, 54, of Northwest, died after he lost control of his vehicle as he was heading westbound on 38th Street and hit a pole, police said. He was also pronounced dead at the hospital.

Speed appears to have been a factor in both crashes, police said.

Dana Hedgpeth contributed to this report.
