When firefighters entered the apartment, Graham said, they found the man in the unit. He was taken to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Authorities identified the man as 52-year-old Michael Francis Mercurio.

People in 29 units in the building were affected because utilities had to be shut off. Those residents should be able to get access to their units later Thursday once utilities are restored, Graham said.

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the blaze.
