SE D.C. standoff ends; police arrest murder suspect
By Allison Klein and and Maggie Fazeli Fard,
An eight-hour standoff in Southeast Washington ended Wednesday when police took a murder suspect into custody.
Police believe that about 2 a.m. Wednesday, the suspect fatally shot J’Ron Brown, 24, in an apartment in the 1700 block of 17th Street SE. The suspect then ran into another apartment on that same block and barricaded himself inside, police said.
A SWAT team was called, and streets were closed in the Fairlawn area near Anacostia High School during the morning rush hour.
Curious residents in the neighborhood of neatly kept, two-story row houses near Minnesota Avenue came out to watch behind yellow police tape.
About eight hours after Brown was shot, police took one man into custody. They declined to name him or provide further details about him or the incident.
Brown, who lived in Southeast Washington, was pronounced dead at a hospital.
