January 9

A small fire burned a basement apartment Thursday night in Chinatown, D.C. authorities said.

A police officer spotted the blaze in the 500 block of I Street NW, in the basement of the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association building, about 8:30 p.m. and called in the emergency, said Officer Hugh Carew, a police spokesman. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and no injuries were reported, fire officials said.

Authorities shut down the 500 block of I Street for more than an hour.
