Suspect charged in robbery at eatery

The man who allegedly robbed two diners at gunpoint at a Logan Circle eatery — and gained notoriety when a surveillance video of the May 17 robbery went viral last week — has been arrested, authorities said Sunday.

D.C. police said James Edward Wade, 30, of the District was arrested Saturday and has been charged with armed robbery.

Wade is accused of strolling onto the patio of Pizzoli’s Pizzeria, in the 1400 block of 12th Street NW, striking up a conversation with two men who were eating there, then casually flashing a handgun and robbing the duo. He allegedly stole a smartphone and wallet from one man and $220 in cash from the man’s friend.

On Thursday, police released surveillance video of the robbery, which included the unusual instance of one man offering the suspect a half-eaten gyro off his plate (a ruse to hide his own smartphone, the man later explained).

Authorities said they received numerous tips from the public that led to Wade.
