Three Northern Virginians killed in car crash

Three young men from Arlington and Alexandria were killed Tuesday evening in a car crash in Southwest Virginia, state police said.

Abenezer D. Thewdros, 19, of Arlington, was driving a Toyota Avalon south on I-81 in Washington County about 6:30 p.m. when he collided with a tractor-trailer, according to police. Thewdros had run off the left side of the road and overcorrected, swerving onto the right shoulder, where the truck was sitting with a flat tire. Thewdros died at the scene, along with two passengers: 19-year-old Abel N. Ayele of Arlington and 25-year-old Alemu S. Ameha of Alexandria. A third passenger, Arketsadik Yilma, 19, of Alexandria was airlifted to Bristol Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.

Neither the tractor-trailer driver nor his passenger were hurt.

Alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the crash, police said. An investigation is ongoing.
