A longtime public defender and a project director at the nonprofit Children’s Law Center have been appointed to serve as magistrate judges for D.C.’s Superior Court, authorities said Monday.

Renee Raymond, a graduate of Yale College and New York University law school, will work in the court’s domestic violence unit, and Sean Staples, a graduate of Syracuse University and The Catholic University of America law school, will work in family court, authorities said. Raymond worked for more than 20 years with the D.C. Public Defender Service, and Staples most recently served as a project director for the Children’s Law Center, authorities said.

The pair will begin their assignments in January, authorities said.
