Victims of Arlington fire identified

Arlington fire officials on Tuesday identified the people killed in a house fire earlier this month as 73-year-old Yvonne Barrie and 77-year-old Bobbie Nelson Goins.

Bystanders said that Goins went back into the house in an attempt to save Barrie, the county fire department said.

The March 15 fire occurred at a two-story, single-family house in the Nauck area. Several people had left the house on their own by the time firefighters arrived, deputy Arlington fire marshal Brian McGraw said on the day of the blaze. But the intensity of the flames engulfing the wood-and-siding building thwarted firefighters initial attempt to enter. The dryness of the day and wind gusts of more than 20 mph apparently made the blaze more intense, McGraw said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
