Wind topples tree, pins woman in bed

Amid blustery winds, a falling tree crashed through the roof of a Fairfax County home early Sunday, pinning a woman in her bed, authorities said.

Working in the damaged house on Lavery Court in the Burke area, county firefighters and a rescue team extricated the woman from between the huge tree and her collapsed bed, a fire department spokesman said. The woman was taken to a hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

The rescue, which began about 1:30 a.m., according to fire department Capt. Willie Bailey, came on one of the season’s coldest nights.

The mercury fell to 23 degrees Sunday morning at Reagan National Airport, with a peak wind gust of 49 mph. At Dulles International Airport, winds averaged 21 mph through the day.

During a snow squall Saturday afternoon, an overhead highway sign fell on Interstate 66 near Monument Avenue in Fairfax. Officials said it was unclear if weather played a part.
