A 54-year-old mother was found fatally beaten Thursday morning in Northwest Washington’s Columbia Heights neighborhood, D.C. police said, and authorities later arrested and charged her daughter with second-degree murder.
Police said they found two victims about 5:20 a.m. in the 1300 block of Columbia Road NW, about one block from the Columbia Heights Metro station.
Tajuana Lynn Hooks was pronounced dead at the scene. Her 30-year-old daughter, Keiva Hooks, was treated at an area hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening, a law enforcement official said.
Officials later charged Keiva Hooks, of Northwest Washington, with second-degree murder while armed. A law enforcement official said investigators believe that Keiva Hooks was under the influence of drugs when she allegedly attacked her mother, and that she injured herself after the fact.
