Young girl and man are shot in Northwest Washington, D.C.

Two people, including a girl who may be as young as 6, were injured in gunfire Tuesday night a few blocks south of the Georgia Avenue-Petworth Metro station.

A police official said the girl was believed to be about 6 The shooting occurred about 7:20 p.m. in the 600 block of Morton Street NW in the Park View area.

One Morton Street resident said she understood that the girl was hit while playing with other children at the Park Morton apartment development at the east end of Morton Street.

Someone working in the neighborhood said the man who was hit appeared to be in his 20s. It seemed that he had been shot in the back, the witness said.

The circumstances of the shooting were not immediately clear, but police said neither person’s injuries were life-threatening.

A preliminary police account said authorities were looking for a man dressed in black with his hair twisted in short dreadlocks. A white car may have been involved, police said.
