D.C. Animal Watch : Heron caught up in fishing line

June 21

North Capitol St. NW, 3700 block, June 3. The Humane Society received a call about a bird with a leg tangled in fishing line. The black-crowned night heron jumped from a branch into a pond and had difficulty swimming.

After the bird was captured, a Humane Society officer removed the line and found a fishhook embedded in the bird’s back. The heron was taken to a wildlife rehabilitator, who removed the hook. The bird was sent to another rehabilitator for a possible wing injury.

Among cases received by the Washington Humane Society.
