By the end of the year, the league will occupy almost 20 percent of the new building. It plans to turn the property into a national rehabilitation center for animals, with a veterinary teaching hospital, a high-volume spaying center and additional space for classes.
Project targets Rock Creek runoff, pollution
The District government has begun a storm water management project to prevent polluted runoff into Rock Creek from two neighborhoods in Northwest, Petworth and Chevy Chase.
The project, part of the RiverSmart Washington public-private partnership, involves landscaping and streetscape improvements.
The landscaping involves adding rain gardens, native plants, downspout disconnections, rain barrels and shade trees to some private properties. Residents will see the streetscape work this winter, when the D.C. Department of Transportation plans to add trees and tree boxes to absorb water before it flows into storm drains.
When all of the work is completed in 2012, the D.C. Department of the Environment will study how much runoff has been reduced.
