Va. Del Alfonso Lopez drops out of 8th congressional district Democratic primary

Virginia state Del. Alfonso Lopez has ended his campaign to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Jim Moran (D) in Congress, saying he lacks the necessary funds to compete in a crowded Democratic primary.

“It is clear to me that I do not have the resources necessary to run the campaign we wanted and that the people of the Eighth District deserved,” he wrote in a message to supporters.

Lopez’s decision leaves 10 candidates vying for the Democratic nomination in the June 10 primary: former lieutenant governor Don Beyer, Alexandria mayor Bill Euille, state Sen. Adam Ebbin (Alexandria), Dels. Charniele L. Herring (Alexandria) and Patrick A. Hope (Arlington), businessmen Bruce Shuttleworth and Satish Korpe, Virginia Tech professor Derek Hyra, former non-profit CEO Lavern Chatman and radio host Mark Levine. An 11th candidate, businesswoman Nancy Najarian, did not make the ballot but is challenging that decision.

Another member of the House of Delegates, Mark D. Sickles has already dropped out of the race and endorsed Ebbin.

Candidates’ financial reports for the first three months of the year are due April 15. Hope’s campaign has already announced, however, that the lawmaker raised over $185,000 and has over $140,000 on hand.

Former congressional aide Micah Edmond and businessman Dennis Bartow are seeking the Republican nomination. The GOP nominee will be chosen in an April 26 convention.
