Johns Hopkins University is seeking to engineer the revival of a huge swath of East Baltimore through an 88-acre project that includes the takeover of a struggling public school. Here’s a look at the neighborhood as it is now as well as at Johns Hopkins’s redevelopment plans.

It's a challenge many major urban universities face. They are not only education centers; they are also developers and landlords next to some of the most downtrodden areas in the country.
