Alexandria middle schoolers will have a slightly longer school day starting next month to make up for time lost during snow days.
Instead of extending the school year or shrinking spring break, as some school districts are doing, Alexandria is adding back time minute by minute.
The district canceled school 10 times this year because of snow and ice.
The board in January approved two make-up days: March 14 and April 11 for traditional calendar schools and Feb 28 and March 21 for modified calendar schools.
With the extra days, the city’s elementary schools and high school met the minimum 973.8 hours required by the state. But middle schools fell short by about 10 hours.
So starting April 21, middle schools are adding 14 minutes to each day. That’s two minutes to each class period.
