Coll to lead Columbia journalism school

Columbia University on Monday named former Washington Post managing editor Steve Coll as dean of its Graduate School of Journalism.

Coll, who will replace Nicholas Lemann as dean starting July 1, is a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner who served as Post managing editor from 1998 through 2004 and is currently president of The New America Foundation in Washington.

Columbia President Lee C. Bollinger called Coll “one of the most experienced and respected journalists of his generation.”

In a statement, Coll said: “The digital revolution has been hugely disruptive within the profession but [has] also made journalism more vital, accessible, and essential. We’re only beginning to learn what great journalism in new media will look like and how to teach, strengthen and inspire journalists in what is increasingly a globalized profession.”
