Hayfield principal in Fairfax to retire for medical reasons

Hayfield Secondary School principal Dave Tremaine is retiring, school officials announced in a letter to parents.

Assistant superintendent Deborah L. Tyler said in a letter sent Tuesday to Hayfield parents that Tremaine will leave the school for unspecified medical reasons.

“It is with a great sense of sadness that I share with you the news that Hayfield Secondary School principal, Dave Tremaine, is retiring for medical reasons,” Tyler wrote, noting that Tremaine had been “courageously battling a medical condition for some time now while balancing the rigorous demands of principal.”

Tremaine has served in Fairfax County schools for more than 24 years, including the last four as principal at Hayfield, located near Alexandria. Tremaine decided to step aside “to spend more time with his family and to focus on his health and well-being,” Tyler wrote.

Hayfield associate principal Tracey Phillips will serve as the interim principal while a permanent successor is selected, Tyler wrote.
