Maryland schools chief takes to Twitter

Maryland’s schools chief is slated to lead her first Twitter chat Tuesday night, in a public give-and-take using the popular social network.

Lillian M. Lowery, the state’s superintendent of schools, and her invited guest, Ray Leone, the president of Maryland’s PTA, will take questions tweeted to #MSDEChat from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Lowery has done many community meetings, but the Twitter chat will mark “the first virtual meeting — the first where people, from the comfort of their own home, can ask a question,” said Bill Reinhard, spokesman for the Maryland State Department of Education.

Hours before the event, one tweet had already come in — from Montgomery County, he said. “We just want to be as open and welcoming as we can be,” he said.

The state education department is on Twitter at @MdPublicSchools.

Donna St. George writes about education, with an emphasis on Montgomery County schools.
