Prince George’s hires new legal counsel

Prince George’s County Schools Chief Executive Officer Kevin Maxwell has hired a long-time school employee as the district’s general counsel.

Shauna Battle, who has served as acting general counsel for the past year, replaces Roger C. Thomas, who left the position last year.

Thomas was one of two administrators removed from their jobs for allegedly using school funds to make an unauthorized payment to the former head of human resources after she resigned.

Max Pugh, a spokesman for the school system, said Thursday that Thomas later appealed the action to the board, which accepted his resignation.

Battle has been employed with the school district for almost 15 years and originally served as the lobbyist for the superintendent and school board. She has managed the Office of Appeals, advised the Board of Education on policies and legislative matters and provided legal services to the district.

Battle graduated from Catholic University of America and the University of Texas School of Law.

Last month, Maxwell hired Maritza Gonzales as a diversity officer, focusing on Latino affairs, and appointed Monique Davis as a deputy superintendent.
