Prince George’s school accepting applications for specialty programs

The Prince George’s County Public School System is accepting online applications for its specialty programs lottery through March 12.

Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m.

The specialty programs in the district include: Creative and Performing Arts, French immersion, Spanish immersion/Dual language, Montessori, and Talented and Gifted.

The Creative and Performing Arts program is open to students in kindergarten through fifth grade through the lottery process. The language programs are open to students entering kindergarten, and Montessori is available to pre-school students. Students who apply for Talented and Gifted must have been identified as being eligible for the program.

Specialty programs have specific boundaries, and school assignments will be based on a student’s address.

The lottery will be held on March 25.

Schools Chief Kevin M. Maxwell has made a push to increase specialty programs offerings. In his proposed budget, Maxwell added Spanish Immersion/Dual language to the programs offered by the county. He also added classes to the district’s Montessori and French Immersion schools.

The increased offerings are part of Maxwell’s plan to lure middle-class parents back to the public schools.
