Prince George’s schools transportation director quits

Thomas Bishop, the embattled transportation director of the Prince George’s County school system, has resigned, according to school officials.

Interim School Superintendent Alvin Crawley confirmed Bishop quit last week.

Bishop is one of more than a half-dozen top administrators who have left the school system since former superintendent William R. Hite Jr. quit last summer to become the schools chief in Philadelphia.

Bishop came to the district about a year ago, just months before Hite’s departure.

Since then, the school system has implemented a transportation policy that resulted in students arriving late to school. Parents have repeatedly complained that the late arrivals were not only inconvenient but were having a negative impact on their children’s academic performance. Some school officials were forced to adjust their school days.

The policy reduced the system’s fleet by 130 buses, consolidated bus routes and cut the number of stops by 2,350.

In addition to Bishop, the Prince George’s school system has lost its chief financial officer, general counsel and director of student services.
