Former U.S. defense secretary Robert M. Gates will give his personal papers to the College of William and Mary, the school announced Thursday.

Gates, an alumnus and chancellor of William and Mary, served as defense secretary under President George W. Bush and President Obama from 2006 to 2011. He was also director of central intelligence under President George H.W. Bush. The donation will not include classified materials, the college said.

Gates and his wife, Rebecca, also pledged $1.5 million from their estate to support student scholarships at the public college in Williamsburg, Va.

Nick Anderson covers higher education for The Washington Post. He has been a writer and editor at The Post since 2005.
