School year 2012-13 gets under way

Most schools in the District and its Maryland suburbs reopen in August. In Northern Virginia, with the notable exception of Loudoun County, most reopen in early September. Here are K-12 start dates for local school systems.

District of Columbia Public Schools: Aug. 27

D.C. public charter schools: Most open on Aug. 27, but some open on other days.

Maryland

Anne Arundel County: Aug. 27 for grades 1-5 and grades 6 and 9. Aug. 28 for grades 7, 8, 10, 11, 12. Aug. 29-31, staggered entrance for kindergarten.

Calvert County: Aug. 21

Charles County: Aug. 27

Frederick County: Aug. 27

Howard County: Aug. 27

Montgomery County: Aug. 27

Prince George’s County: Aug. 20

St. Mary’s County: Aug. 22

Virginia

Alexandria: Sept. 4

Arlington County: Sept. 4

Fairfax County: Sept. 4

Falls Church: Sept. 4

Loudoun County: Aug. 27

Manassas: Sept. 4, grades 1-12. Sept. 5, kindergarten.
