A few unconventional summer camps that offer learning opportunities for children while school is out:

Whale Camp: On Grand Manan Island, between Maine and Nova Scotia in the Bay of Fundy, the highest tides in the world create one of the richest and most diverse marine biology ecosystems. Children ages 10 to 17 get up close and personal with whales and other marine life. www.whalecamp.com.

Space Camp: In Huntsville, Ala., campers engineer robots, fly space simulators and more. For students in fourth through 12th grade, plus programs for adults and people with disabilities. www.spacecamp.com.

Wizards and Warriors Camp: In Burlington and Reading, Mass., the whole summer experience for each camper is based on an interactive story line and the children decide the outcome, all meant to foster teamwork and creativity. Day and boarding programs for children ages 7 to 15. www.swordsummercamp.com.
