Accessible play area will open

at Lee District Park in Franconia

The first section of the new Chessie’s Big Backyard play area at Lee District Park in Franconia will open June 16. The play areas can be used by all children, including those with disabilities.

The $600,000 project was funded with private and corporate contributions and park bonds. Lee District Park is at 6601 Telegraph Rd.

Supervisors honor ‘lords’ and ‘ladies’ who have given to county

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors recognized this year’s Lords and Ladies Fairfax, a tradition that had been part of the Celebrate Fairfax festival since 1984. The honor recognizes people who have made contributions to the community.

There is one lord and one lady named for each supervisory district and one at large, selected by the board chairman.

This year’s at-large honorees are Kathy Albarado, president and chief executive of Helios HR, who volunteers with Reston Interfaith; and Delbert “Bill” Shields, a lifelong county resident and historian. Eighteen other men and women were honored in the districts for their community contributions.
