Sully Historic Site needs volunteer teaching docents, touring docents and gardeners to help preserve and interpret the 1794 home of Richard Bland Lee. Teaching docents lead small groups of children through the site and answer questions about its history, buildings, grounds and collections. Touring docents guide visitors of all ages through the site and answer questions. Gardeners work on all phases of indoor and outdoor gardening. Herndon needs volunteers to fill vacancies on the advisory committee of the Chestnut Grove Cemetery. The committee provides guidance to the cemetery on future development, general operations and rules and regulations. The National Cherry Blossom Festival needs volunteers to assist in event set-up and breakdown, site maintenance, interaction with attendees at signature events and more. ReSET needs volunteer scientists, engineers and technicians in elementary school classrooms to present programs in their fields of interest to spark enthusiasm for science. The Northern Virginia Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program needs volunteers to advocate for the rights of residents in nursing homes and assisted living facilities, to help resolve conflicts and to improve the quality of life for the residents. The Naomi Project, sponsored by the Virginia Council of Churches, needs volunteers to serve as mentors to pregnant women and new mothers in Northern Virginia. Mentors are trained to work one-on-one with a mother to provide information on good health during pregnancy and for newborns, to locate needed services and equipment, to provide reinforcement and to model sound parenting skills. The 1-2-1 Mentoring Program in Falls Church needs volunteers to serve as role models who provide support, encouragement and friendship to youth in grades five to seven.
