At least four people have been held up on the street in the past two weeks in armed robberies that have occurred after dark in the Southwest Washington neighborhood near the Mall, the Washington Channel and the Washington Nationals baseball park.
The four incidents have similarities in time, place and the number of robbers involved — between three and five, police said. In each case, police said, the victims have been alone.
The most recent incident occurred Sunday night within a few blocks of a supermarket, Arena Stage and the Waterfront Metro station. Officers said that as many as five people, one with a gun, committed the robbery about 10 p.m. at Fourth and M streets SW.
The robbers ran toward South Capitol Street. An officer arrived in time to see them, and a foot chase ensued.
A boy was taken into custody and charged with robbery, police said. Officers said property was recovered.
Officers said they were continuing to investigate that robbery and the three other similar incidents, which have all occurred between 6 and 10 p.m.
The robbery that appeared to be the first in the series occurred about 6 p.m. Nov. 3 in the 1200 block of Delaware Avenue, near a public housing development about three blocks from the site of Sunday’s incident.
The second occurred at 9:30 p.m. Nov. 4 on a sidewalk in the 1400 block of Fourth Street SW. That location is about two blocks south of the site of the Sunday incident and about a half-mile west of the Washington Nationals stadium on South Capitol Street. The stadium is dark until the spring.
The third robbery occurred about 6 p.m. Nov. 8 in the 200 block of G Street, about one block south of the Southwest Freeway and three-quarters of a mile northeast of the Sunday’s holdup.
