Frager’s Paint Store reopens after fire

September 7, 2013

Frager’s Paint Store reopened Saturday with a community celebration, months after the much-loved Capitol Hill hardware store was destroyed by a fire.

It’s another piece of the network of businesses customers knew simply as Frager’s, which opened as a hardware store more than 90 years ago and became an institution in the neighborhood. Bit by bit, Frager’s owners have been offering some products and services in temporary locations.

Customers have been getting keys cut and buying plants at a pop-up store in Eastern Market, leasing things such as snow-cone machines and power sanders at Just Ask Rental’s temporary location on E Street SE, and now can buy house-painting supplies on Pennsylvania Avenue SE.

The Capitol Hill Community Foundation has raised more than $160,000 to help support the workers of Frager’s and other small businesses damaged by the June 5th fire.
