A soldier from Frederick died last week in Afghanistan while on his first deployment, according to the Defense Department.
Army Sgt. David V. Williams, 24, was four months into his deployment when he died Saturday near Kandahar. The cause of death was under investigation.
Williams was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state.
Williams joined the Army in 2008, and after basic training, he was sent to Camp Red Cloud in South Korea.
He arrived at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in February 2011.
Williams had received several awards, including the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, according to the Defense Department release.
Family members could not be reached for comment.
