Gunshot shatters Metro train window after two passengers fight

A fight between two men on a New Carrollton-bound Metro train early Sunday resulted in a bullet hole in the window of the Orange Line train and the arrest of one of the men.

Two men, who knew each other, were having a dispute on the train, Metro officials said, and one struck the other on the head with the butt of a gun. The contact caused the gun to discharge, breaking the window on the train. No one else on the train was injured.

When the train pulled into Cheverly shortly after 2 a.m., a Metro Transit police officer on routine patrol became aware of the situation and was able to take control of the gun and arrest the suspect.

The male victim was taken to the hospital with a non-life-threatening laceration.
