‘Hugging saint’ embraces followers in Alexandria
An Alexandria hotel ballroom was transformed Friday morning into an ashram, with hundreds of people from across the country meeting a woman who they believe is a saint — and whose power is said to be transmitted through hugs.

Mata Amritanandamayi, or "Amma," as devotees call her (it means "mother" in Hindi), gave personal blessings to her followers through hugs at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center. Amma, called "the hugging saint," arrived in the Washington area Friday. She plans to hug thousands of followers in the region in the next few days.
