Human remains found near I-395 in Alexandria

Skeletal remains were found Monday near Interstate 395 in Alexandria, Virginia State Police said.

The remains were found by a construction crew in the wooded cloverleaf at the ramp for Exit 3A, which leads traffic from the northbound interstate lanes to the eastbound lanes of Duke Street.

State police described the remains as badly decomposed, and said it was not possible to determine whether the body was that of a male or female. No identification was found.

Evidence of homeless encampments was found in the cloverleaf, although the area did not appear to be currently occupied, police said.

They said the remains have been taken to the Office of the Medical Examiner. The matter is under investigation by the state police.
