Kid’s Room 2012 Contest winner

Lesli DeVito of Greenwood, Va., combined yard sale finds, store-bought staples and lots of color to make a sleepover-ready room for her teenage daughter, Phoebe. Phoebe’s room was the judges’ favorite in the 2012 Kid’s Room Contest.

Phoebe DeVito's bedroom won The Washington Post Kid's Room Contest. For her 13th birthday, DeVito asked her mom, Lesli, to redecorate her bedroom on the condition that she not include any chocolate brown. While Phoebe was away on a class trip to Virginia’s Wallops Island, Lesli got to work. She painted three of the walls white and included a navy accent wall and a light pink ceiling strip. Yellow, navy and pink are Phoebe's favorite colors.

The pink and white rug is from Pottery Barn Teen ($150), and the two beds were picked up from a yard sale. They cost a total of $25. Lesli DeVito bought the mattresses from a friend for $30. The bedside table was a gift for Phoebe's 6th birthday that has been repainted over the years.

The cow painting was done by mom Lesli, who is a professional artist. 'The kids understand that no painting is permanently theirs,' she said, laughing. 'If someone wants to buy it, there it goes!'

This Gypsy Chandelier was part of Phoebe DeVito's 13th birthday present, a bedroom makeover. Lesli DeVito bought it from Urban Outfitters and returned it out of guilt (it was $175). But a few months later, it sold out. When it finally became available again the following year, she bought it again. 'Now, I don't know how the room worked without it,' she said.
