Del. Tom Hucker, confirming a widely expected move, said he will file Monday as a candidate in the Democratic primary for the District 5 Montgomery County Council seat.
“I’m in,” said Hucker, 46, who is serving his second term in the Maryland House of Delegates representing District 20. It includes much of the Silver Spring and Takoma Park area covered by the council seat. The seat is held by Cherri Branson (D-Silver Spring), appointed last month to finish the unexpired term of Valerie Ervin, who resigned. Branson will not be a candidate in the June primary.
Hucker joins what could be a crowded field that includes Silver Spring activist Evan Glass and Jeffrey Thames, founder of Hope Restored, a community service nonprofit. Also expected to file before the 9 p.m. Tuesday deadline are Board of Education member Christopher S. Barclay and Takoma Park activist Terrill North.

A shooting Sunday morning in Northeast Washington left one man dead, authorities said.
D.C. police answered a call about the sound of gunshots about 3:29 a.m. near the 400 block of Florida Avenue NE, officer John Strader said. The police found a man with wounds in his back.
Officials are looking for a gray four-door Chevrolet Impala in connection with the case, Strader said. Four people were in the car, but no information on their ages, gender or race was available. A description of the shooter also was not available.
The name and details of the man who was shot have not been released as police worked to notify his family.
