Loudoun County news in brief

Historic land-survey records available at Balch Library

Two important collections of records documenting land surveys in Loudoun County in the mid-19th century are available to researchers at the Thomas Balch Library in Leesburg.

The Asa Jackson Collection contains the survey book and measuring tape of Jackson, who regularly surveyed parcels involved in land transactions in Loudoun. His notebook contains 85 surveys from 1860 to 1866 and an index. The collection also has a 50-foot cotton measuring tape in a leather case probably used by Jackson for his surveys.

The Yardley Taylor Surveying Notebook belonged to a Loudoun surveyor known for his “Map of Loudoun County, Virginia, From Actual Surveys,” published in 1853. No mention of the map is made in the notebook. It is made up entirely of surveys of parcels in Loudoun and was in use during the years Taylor was working on his map. The notebook continues beyond the date of Taylor’s death, with surveys in a different handwriting, possibly that of his nephew, Bernard Taylor, the library said.

Leesburg contest seeks videos showing off town

Leesburg’s Economic Development Department has announced the launch of a video contest that aims to showcase the town as a great place in which to live, work or visit.

Individuals and teams are invited to submit original digital videos of three minutes or less illustrating what they love about Leesburg.

Videos will be evaluated in one of three age categories: eighth-grade students and younger, high school students and adults. One winner and up to five honorable mentions will be selected in each category.

The deadline is May 4. Winners will be announced at the Leesburg Town Council Meeting on May 22.

Each individual winner will receive a $500 savings bond; each honorable mention designee will receive a $100 savings bond.

“The video contest is intended to complement the new ‘Conversations About Leesburg’ business-to-business video that the town’s Economic Development Department recently released,” Betsy Fields, research and communications manager, said in a statement. “That video focuses on why businesses have chosen Leesburg. Through this contest, we hope to hear from high school students and young adults what they think is great about Leesburg.”

County is planting the seeds for annual Spring Farm Tour

The Loudoun County Department of Economic Development has started planning for this year’s Spring Farm Tour, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 19 and 20.

The free, self-guided tour showcases active farms in the county to promote Loudoun agriculture and to educate the public about the county’s rural economy.

The weekend event also informs consumers of what products are grown and available locally.

With 35 farms and 14 wineries participating last year, the weekend-long tour attracted about 9,000 visitors, county officials said in a statement.

Farmers who want to participate should contact Coco Lyons, marketing coordinator with the Loudoun County Department of Economic Development, at 703-737-8322 or coco.lyons@loudoun.gov to request an application and a copy of the tour policies and guidelines.

Information is also available at www.loudounfarms.org.

Completed applications must be received by March 16.
