Loudoun school bus hits tree

September 20, 2013

A Loudoun County school bus veered off the road in Purcellville and hit a tree Friday morning, causing only minor injuries to some of the students and the driver aboard the bus, according to authorities.

The bus was taking 37 students to Mountain View Elementary School around 7:30 a.m. when it apparently veered off the road, broke through a fence along Main Street in Purcellville and crashed into a pine tree, according to Wayde Byard, Loudoun County schools spokesman.

Sixteen students and the driver were evaluated by medical personnel and taken to Inova Cornwall Hospital as a precaution, Byard said. No serious injuries resulted from the crash, according to authorities.

“As luck would have it, this bus had its bus evacuation drill yesterday,” Byard said. “Everybody seems to be okay... the kids kicked the back door open and came off the bus in a fairly orderly fashion, as they were supposed to.”

There were no other vehicles involved in the accident, according to Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Liz Mills. She said it was not immediately clear what had caused the bus to leave the road, but authorities were continuing to investigate the accident.
