Man dies in Suitland Parkway accident
By Peter Hermann,
An accident Wednesday night in which at least two people were pinned in a car on Suitland Parkway in Southeast Washington has left one man dead, according to D.C. police.
Three others were being treated at local hospitals with serious and critical injuries, according to police. The 8 p.m. accident near Naylor Road forced police to close the road in both directions for more than four hours.
Officer Araz Alali, a police spokesman, said the accident occurred when a man driving a Lincoln Sport Utility Vehicle lost control while heading west on Suitland Parkway. Alali said the SUV slid across a raised median and struck an eastbound Nissan Ultima with three men inside.
The driver of the SUV, who was identified Thursday as Darnell Smith, 33, of Suitland, died later at a local hospital, Alali said. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
