A 31-year-old man was arrested Tuesday and charged in the death of a St. Mary’s County woman whose body was found Friday evening near a county park, authorities said.
The county bureau of criminal investigations said John Morris Quade Jr. of Lexington Park was charged with murder and robbery in the death of Moneta Jo Strickland, 32, of Mechanicsville.
The cause of death was blunt-force trauma, officials said.
Strickland, a nurse, was reported missing Thursday after she did not show up for her shift at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital. Her vehicle was found at a park near Three Notch Trail, where she liked to run.
Officials said investigators used surveillance video footage from a business and a witness description of a man on the trail.
According to officials and records, the suspect was a registered sex offender, based on a third-degree sex offense charge.
Moneta Strickland was a graduate of Leonardtown High School, who held a biology degree from Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va., and studied nursing at Montgomery College.
Her mother told a reporter last week that she was engaged to be married.
