Man robs bank impersonating Santa, or maybe ‘Duck Dynasty’ character, police say

A man wearing a dirty-gray Santa beard rushed into a suburban D.C. bank on Saturday morning, fired at least one shot into the ceiling and robbed tellers of cash before fleeing in a maroon sedan, police say.

The robbery sent police cars screaming into the quaint, brick-lined streets of downtown Laurel, Md., just as the PNC Bank branch at 390 Main Street opened at 9 a.m., police said.

The bank remains closed, and Laurel and Prince George’s County police continue to patrol nearby neighborhoods looking for the getaway car or anyone who may have seen it.

“Fortunately, no one was hurt,” said Laurel Police Department spokesman Pete Piringer.

Bank employees described the robber’s disguise as a Santa beard, Piringer said, “but it looked more ‘Duck Dynasty’ to me,” he said, referring to the streaked gray beards worn by several cast members of the popular, and now politicized, A&E television series.

Piringer said the suspect fired at least one shot and was in and out of the bank within three minutes.

“We believe someone saw the car afterward, and we are asking for the public’s help,” he said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Laurel Police Department’s tip line at 301-498-7645, or the department’s non-emergency line at 301-498-0092.
