D.C. police have identified a man found stabbed to death Monday evening near a well-traveled road through Rock Creek Park, according to authorities. The victim’s name was not immediately released pending notification of relatives.

Acting Capt. Robert Alder, commander of the homicide unit, said detectives have not determined a motive or suspect. A class of police cadets scoured the area on Tuesday to search for clues in daylight.

A passerby found the body about 7:50 p.m. lying along a creek bed in woods near Beach Drive and Joyce Road in Northwest Washington. It’s just north of Military Road and about a mile north of a U.S. Park Police station.

Beach Drive is popular for commuters during the week but is closed to traffic and used by bikers and joggers on weekends and holidays. Police said the victim was not wearing clothing consistent with outdoor recreational activities. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene.

Alder also said police have not determined whether the man was killed in the park or elsewhere. U.S. Park Police Maj. Keith Horton said, “We consider that area safe.”
