New York-based freelance photojournalist Katja Heinemann takes a portrait photograph of Thilo Christ, 49, from Germany, at the 19th International AIDS Conference at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Christ has been HIV-positive since 1995 and volunteers as a cook for Deutsche AIDS-Hilfe. His portrait is one of many that Heinemann is taking as part of her ongoing project “The Graying With AIDS,” which she helped create seven years ago. “The Graying of AIDS” is a multimedia project that combines portraits and oral histories of people who contracted HIV long ago and people who contracted the virus later in life.
